Vital Signs: Biopolitics, Spatiality and Information
This theory course explores emergent modes of creative production, with an orientation toward the relations therein to new technologies, spatiality and information. Through investigating concepts of ‘space’ and ‘information’, the course aims to frame ways of understanding the dynamic foundations of cultural activity in this biopolitical, information age. Of particular interest is the current reappraisal of the concept of ‘life’ and the emphasis upon dynamic, processual systems within art and design production.
The course also involves the investigation and development of research methods relevant to both individual and collaborative modes of research, including reading and writing practices, research documentation, shared on-line research environments and think-tanking. The course will introduce participants to various communities and networks where relevant. This will include exposure to current or recent events, list servers, conferences and email digests.
Explorations into extensions of the text (the essay) through compositional experiment and the use of other media will be encouraged.
This seminar will have a large online component.
