WEEK 14 we are planning to have an informal class in this non-teaching week. either by appointment or in class time as was done prior to mid crit.
BRIEF - DOCKLANDS – “FASHION NODE” – TAKE II
The purpose of the next half of semester is to turn your ideas and what you have learnt into a project with
a site and brief. The interaction between architects and fashion designers should be fruitful and produce
interesting original results. This requires commitment from everybody.
The site is the docklands – victoria harbour – the large site next to docklands park (the site is bounded by
north wharf road, bourke street road and docklands park).
Some of you have quite large scale ideas and some have small scale ideas, the program IS flexible and
you should use your design skills to split or join the program appropriately.
Fashion designers will join in and work further with the techniques developed in order to extend the
material qualities and project. Initially they will be acting as clients so that the group dynamic is set up
early on. This means that you must work in a group otherwise a major part of the input will be missing.
The fashion students should direct the group in how they see the spaces/building reflecting their design
philosophy, or even their past collections. For example the Prada stores have a very specific brief that
has been developed in collaboration with the architect. The result are unique stores that express their
philosophy and even extend it. Another example would be the commes des garcons guerilla stores – this
is an architectural idea that communicates the philosophy of buying the brand.
Architects should use the knowledge of how fashion studios work to understand the how the program
should function. Each project should be different because each “client” will have a different way of
wanting their building to function and express their philosophy.
PROGRAM – FASHION STUDIOS / EXHIBITION SPACE
1. 10 X 100m2 - studios – where designers work on collections
2. 1 x 100m2 – machinery/equipment for fabrication + storage area + wet areas
3. 250m2 – exhibition space + storage – designers can show their work or general exhibitions
relating to fashion/textiles
4. 150m2 – Foyer, lounge, café + storage & wet areas– this space should be flexible enough to
show collections on a catwalk if necessary
GROUPS
1. Ahmad, Carolyn + Grace (fashion), Nicole (fashion)
2. Jiroj, Arturo + Sam (fashion), Shaun (fashion)
3. Linda, Carlos + Liam (fashion), Pia (fashion)
4. Gavin, Nadia, Alan + Amanda (fashion)
5. Grant, Effie + Kate (fashion)
REQUIREMENTS FOR NEXT WEEK
1. Text defining your direction / approach to the project and brief.
2. Groups are to find scaled site information – a cad plan which is easily obtainable – check the
RMIT system. This plan should be brought in at 1:500 scale
3. Work in groups to decide on your direction – ie: is yours a large scale roof-type project that
houses program under or is it a series of smaller programs linked together etc etc
4. Photographic survey- go to the site and photograph it, making a group decision on where you
might site your building. You may choose the waters edge, building edge, river itself, existing
buildings etc etc
5. general diagrams of access to site
6. Preliminary sketches of your group approach and how you propose to deal with the site.
NOTE REGARDING SPACE ON LEVEL 7
I have spoken to krystyna and we have the space until the end of week 15, by which time all materials need to be removed. we will discuss how we will go about storing models etc for the exhibition.
Can tutors maybe sort this out?
Thank you
Ji
For next class (Week 9) meet up with your group members and discuss primary concept for your collaboration on the fashion node as per brief
**** MIDSEMESTER CRIT (Week 8) - 14th of september - we hope to have a distinguished, cross-disciplinary panel to add to the discussion. Location to be in room 8.12.38 NOT level 7.
For next class (Week 7) Produce models and deliver imagery for the Melbourne Fashion Show
For next class (Week 4) continue experimentation, use paper cutter and 3D scanner. Work in groups/individually in your area of fabrication. Architects interact with fashion people and vice versa
For next class (Week 3) each group is expected to meet before class and prepare a small presentation of their first experimentations.
As mentioned in last class, if any of you would like to present your work in pin-up format i have attached a pdf and dwg of the standard format that you should use. I have also attached an example of how another student has used it. it makes life easier for you because there is no need to design your sheet and you can focus on prototyping/experimentation.
Also just to reinforce what was said in last class - we will be pushing ahead with experimentation, using all kinds of material or just one - its up to you. This is a fairly flexible time where you should be free to pursue several directions, but make sure you critically think about what you are doing so that you don’t get carried away into "art/scuplture" etc/. Also you should draw your experiments in 2d cad format - this will pull what you are doing away from art and make you think about making and fabrication. feel free to send images that you have for us to look at - just make sure the email size does not go over 1mb.
Thanks Leanne
In class we will also discuss how you can place your projects on the wiki!
SIAL lab access
Access to the rapid prototyping facilities at SIAL (in particular the paper-cutter) can be gained only in supervisor/studio assistant company. This page will serve as a forum to arrange for times and get feedback from the supervisors. We strongly recommend arranging for times where several groups can meet and load up their files at once instead of arranging for a time individually.
I propose Wednesday the 9th of August at 5.30pm for a first session. Please reply to Dominik to confirm attendance!
Times for SIAL access are principally bookable via these people:
