Emergent Publications seminar
This seminar will involve:
- the design and production of on-line and printed promotional material for the INTIMATE DISTANCE: liveness and affect Visiting Fellows Program activites (5th to 11th of August) as well as the INTIMATE DISTANCE: surfacing unnatural histories event in October 2003.
- the design and preparation of a book to be published in 2004. Currently titled Emergent Aesthetics this book will involve publishing processes and outcomes of the above. As such a significant part of this seminar will be the archiving and composition of emergent material.
Design Brief
All things produced through this seminar will operate as design research that relating to the overall agenda for the Liveness Manifold (http://liveness.sial.rmit.edu.au/) and, more specifically, that works toward capturing an (emerging) aesthetic sensibility for the INTIMATE DISTANCE: surfacing unnatural histories event. This research will be folded into design outcomes for the book and web site.
Responsive skin is an important linking idea and device. The latex skin for the Experimedia installation (the outside box) will act as a continuous, vibrating (in parts), stretchy, patterned, tactile surface that links different intensities together across the field of its surface. The web site (the distributed box) will also be a responsive elastic skin that will enable people to view events and to interact with them (the extent to which will be determined over the semester).
Skin is an organ which is highly sensitive, elastic, porous. A leaky, mediating boundary.
This seminar will be engaged in fielding that which emerges on the surface: capturing, cataloguing and composing.
EmerGence? is a key As Massumi writes: "Composition is less a critical thought project than an integrally experienced emergence. It is a creative event" (p 174, Parables)
keywords are always: tactility, technology, perception, affect
Phase One: PromotionMaterial
Phase Two: VFPpublicationS - INTIMATE DISTANCE: liveness and affect Visiting Fellows Program activites (5th to 11th of August)
