DorianSays Essay Topic(s):
Animation Architecture/ the excitement and tantalizations that come with the architects new found ability to share the language of the animator (or of animation) by far exceeds the success (or lack there of) we have witnessed in any building that seeks to use it. Software is the mediator, it is the frame or window through which we look to satisfy our fantasy, but it’s also quite often where the fantasy is fertilized. The “naturally” inquisitive mind, wants to understand what it is drawn to, it’s the doing, the implementing of this virtually realistic undertaking that challenges. That is to say, we could pull apart the art of animation till the cows come home(eg Rakatansky), but how does it come to bare on a building? Why is it relative? How can it be experienced? Is it good?
I know the possibilities are there… but I have yet to see them realized, it makes me unfortunately skeptical, because I really do want to believe… Moreover and much more desperately, I want to participate in the experiment (too scientific?).
I guess my question is simple:- Are we wasting our time trying to get results out of a static building? (Probably not entirely) Or should we make the shift to the realm of the virtual without the inevitable jump back to bricks and mortar? (Probably yes in some capacity, but not simply for moving forms)
I think the problem with the latter proposition is the current computer interface we are dealing with. It’s just not immersive enough. I wish it could be more like being in the matrix.
Computer image as a fetish, is it a problem? We seek to understand it but we don't. (IngerSays: a bit like trying to count the black dots).
FelicityText: motion and movement. Believability (cf bugs bunny cartoons)
DorianText:If animation isn't about making th ebuilding literally move, but you want to create potential movement or stored energy - CompressioN? RefractioN? SoundwaveS? (SoundIdeas also Panch the composer, TaksimS?). Maybe it is about the illusion? If something can't be unstable how can it seem to be weighty?
IngerSays: Liveness -----> Animated building ----> The potential for movement?:
Discuss JohnMacarthur? article what are the implications for animation and design? Is it really about animation, is it the "way?"

The riles of the virtual and the rules of the actual. Simulations. You have to set up rules. Choose your constraints influences? that make it more interesting.
StephanieText: if architecture serves a general public is there an ethical consideration here to consider.It is not enough for the architect to understand their design on its own for it to be insular - how do you extend it / is it exclusionary?
BenText: Too often the public critique a new public building without explanation. I don't looooirke (like) it......it looks like a big pile of sh.....(does anybody know if its ok to swear on the wiki - or does it have a (G) rating)? Isn't it ok for a building to have layers of meaning? Even if the general public don't consciously "get" the representation a building can still be successful from a pragmatic perspective. The richness of meaning (as Venturi would say) is still there though for anyone that cares to see.
DorianText and JessText - put a sign like in a gallery that explains what the building is about. Shane Murrays talk about the gulf between the building and the idea. Deferment of talking about making the form - is the form about the idea or is it about "style"
IngerSays: check this this article out - wimps out dorian
Stef> thanks heaps for the comments...afraid its still a bit runny!!!!!! will look at yours...good luck with it
BenText: You sound like you are onto something good with your essay Dorian. Your realization that in the actual world, we are limited either to architectural form that represents the process of frames in animation (like what you are doing in your design studio) or by implying movement. The Gaudi interior image that was shown at one of the lectures was in my opinion one of the best examples of implied movement. Representation of forces - Tension and comperession also imply movement - as you have already said. As far as the virtual - Does anything go (Matrix) - or is it the responsibility of the designer of virtual space to set up some rules - gravity? Sorry theres not too much new material for you here - I heard we were going to see the Matrix reloaded as a group - Wonder where this will take you.......
StephanieText : link matrix and Baudrillard
this is an essay i found which you might find interesting. it makes reference to Simulacra and Simulation of environments, I haven't read it thoroughly but it talks about the movie a lot.
